I had Leslie meet me under the overpass in New Orleans to make this photograph. This was our first and only encounter. I prefer to photograph women I don’t know because it better enables me to create fictions around them. The stories I chase are broad. I am not necessarily interested in the specific truth of a particular woman, but rather in the larger stories that she elicits: ones of life and death, power and vulnerability, magnificence and uncertainty. This image is part of a larger body of work titled Annabelle, Annabelle and was made with a Mamiya RZ67 and Kodak Portra film.
