COMPETITION

The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition is open to artists who are at least 18 years old and who are living and working in the United States. The competition welcomes portraits made in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, video, performance, and time-based media. Each artist may enter one work.

The Call for Entries for the 2022 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition is now closed.

Prizes and Exhibition

The first-prize winner will receive $25,000 and a commission to portray a remarkable living American for the National Portrait Gallery’s collection. The second-prize winner will receive $7,500, and the third-prize winner will receive $5,000. Up to four additional artists will be commended for their work and will receive $1,000 each. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will receive $500.

All finalists’ works will form a major exhibition that will be on view at the Portrait Gallery from April 30, 2022, through February 26, 2023, with plans for a subsequent national tour.
