The Mother Series captures the divisive issues that surround the debate about motherhood in the 21st century. It subverts the traditional form of portraiture and family pictures by turning the mother’s back to the camera while the children face the lens. This shift displaces her selfhood yet simultaneously conveys upon the mother the status of an icon. The children who surround her create a visual and metaphorical umbilical cord. Together these portraits invite a comparative analysis of identity and the maternal bond.
