Duchess of Toledo

Duchess of Toledo is a portrait of Eden Eichenberg, my eldest daughter. It is a play on the classic portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino by Piero della Francesca (1465-66). Through the use of symbolism both within the painting and its frame I express to the viewer something more about the sitter than just her physical characteristics. For example: The acorn and oak leaf motif incorporated within the frame is a play on “Eichenberg,” which translates into “oak mountain.” The background is a rendering of Toledo, Spain, which is also the Sister City to Toledo, Ohio where Eden was born. Her clothes tell of her love for cats and the snowflakes on her shirt are symbolic of her winter birth.
