The portrait of my friend Donnie Hawley came out of a desire to merge my years of classical training with contemporary subjects. Donnie has a face that portrays so much life and such wonderful character; from his trademark squint to his tattooed hands, the primary tools of his trade. A proper man’s haircut is as much a work of art to Donnie as painting a lasting image is to me. My desire is to bring the sense of Americana to Donnie’s portrait, showing the sitter in his environment, wonderful clutter and all. Donnie is truly in his element while standing in his shop, a virtual museum of yesteryear that embodies the quintessential men’s barbershop.
