The son of Italian immigrants, documentary photographer Louie Palu grew up in Toronto. Palu’s most recent work focuses on the U.S.–Mexico border because he feels the Western media is ignoring victims of the Mexican drug war to concentrate on the conflicts in the Middle East. This portrait is from his series Mira Mexico, a “conceptual newspaper.” Palu notes, “I like . . . blurring the lines between journalism and art. . . . It became a project about questioning what we see, what we don’t see and who are the gatekeepers that control this.” Palu met the subject of the portrait, Marisol, the night before she was deported. He portrays victims such as this in hopes that we “can quietly view and reflect on the trauma these people have experienced and see how that might shed light on our own sense of empathy.”
