I wanted to create a small self portrait which seemed bigger than its actual size through gesture and emotion. The skin color is meant to represent the color of individuals of African descent. I was interested in taking on the identity of another individual. I am a bi-racial half Asian, half Caucasian male. I am interested in how differences are negotiated between people and within the self. How does someone negotiate being queer, religious, and mixed raced, with one’s self and with others? I am interested in how one identifies, and how individuals are identified by others, in terms of appearance. By changing my skin color through a small confrontational representation I seek to raise questions.
