Maureen Drennan is drawn to small, isolated communities, photographing the people who live in them. She examines their relationship with the surrounding environment and focuses on themes of change and transition, loss and resilience. This portrait of Shannan is part of the Broad Channel series, which portrays an island community in Jamaica Bay, Queens. The flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 cost many people their homes and devastated the community; Drennan used this series to capture the resilience of the island’s inhabitants.
